The launch event will feature a concert by students from the Instrument Academies and a panel discussion with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Susanna Pettersson, among others. Advance registration is required to attend the event.
2024 has been a significant year for the Instrument Academies, as earlier this year the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation granted a total of 2.5 million euros for their long-term development.
We will end the year by celebrating the launch of the Instrument Academies and Finnish music education in the Glazed Foyer at Musiikkitalo (Mannerheimintie 13A, Helsinki) on Tuesday, 17 December 2024 at 16-18. The number of participants is limited, so please register in advance. The event is free of charge. The event will be held in Finnish.
The launch event will begin at 16.00 with a discussion on how to support exceptional talent. The panel will include Esa-Pekka Salonen, conductor, composer and director of the Colburn School's orchestra conducting programme; Susanna Pettersson, CEO of the Finnish Cultural Foundation; Pirre Raijas, Doctor of Music and cultural director of Järvenpää, Finland; Petri Alanko, flutist and programme director of wind instruments at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts; and Erkki Liikanen, former chair of the board of the Association of Finnish Symphony Orchestras and former governor of the Bank of Finland.
After the discussion at 17.00, we will enjoy a concert by current students of the Instrument Academies: Maximilian Fagerlund (piano), Lilja Haatainen (violin), Peppi Ikonen (trumpet), Einari Järvinen (tuba), Kaisla Koivunoro (French horn), Martta Kunnola (viola), Saima Malmivaara (cello), Ella Oksava (piano), Inari Setälä (trombone) ja Viggo Sundqvist (trumpet).
The three Instrument Academies, the String Academy, the Finnish Youth Piano Academy and the Brass Academy, provide regular tuition for talented and motivated young musicians under the guidance of top teachers. The students of the Instrument Academies are aged between 8 and 20 and come from all over Finland. The Instrument Academies are generously supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation.
